We're looking for our first SF-based product engineer!

We just doubled our team headcount from 5 → 10 over the last few months and we're hiring the first few people who'll help us ship fast, set the culture, and define what Surface looks like at scale. We’re backed by Y Combinator, Garry Tan, and Dharmesh Shah (HubSpot co-founder) — and engineering velocity is at an all-time high (thanks Claude Code 🙏)

Surface Labs is the operations layer for modern marketing teams.

The $50B+ marketing and sales ops market is still embarrassingly manual. Surface is the first Lead Operations Center that fixes it — AI agents and humans running the entire lead lifecycle together, automatically.

We started in SaaS. Law firms, agencies, universities, and real estate brokerages started finding us. Turns out every industry has a lead problem. Metronome (acq. by Stripe), Kintsugi, Juicebox.ai, and more plug into HubSpot or Salesforce in minutes and watch their ops run themselves.

We process 50K+ leads a month, from lead capture to closed deal and growing every month.

What you'll work on

The problems we face here are genuinely hard and change fast:

• Talk to customers daily — this is the only way to learn what to build
• Ship new AI products weekly — we move fast, test with customers, and iterate. You'll own features end-to-end from idea to production.
• Agent observability & evals — build the systems that make our AI agents reliable, measurable, and improvable. What does "good" look like when an AI is qualifying 50K leads a month?
• AI-powered workflow generation — marketers describe what they need in plain English; Surface builds the forms, logic, and routing automatically. You'll build the engine that makes this real.
• Operations execution at scale — the high-throughput layer running enrichment, CRM syncs, scoring, and behavioral email sequences reliably.

Who you are

You might be a former founder, a PM-turned-engineer, or just someone who's always been closer to the product than your job title suggested. You ship things people actually use, you talk to customers without being asked to, and you get restless when you're not building.

Required:

• Full-stack experience — TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL
• Shipped 0-to-1 products end-to-end
• Comfortable talking to customers and translating feedback into product decisions

Bonus:

• Agent evals, LLM reliability, or AI observability experience
• Experience building marketing automation systems, workflow tools, or CRM integrations (HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo)
• Former founder
• Eye for design
