About Bretton AI

We work in-person at our San Francisco office five days a week, believing the best ideas and fastest learning happen through side-by-side collaboration. We challenge each other daily and build innovative products together.

Bretton AI builds AI agents that help financial services companies manage risk and compliance and fight financial crime. We serve major clients like Robinhood, Mercury, and other major U.S. financial institutions, helping them grow while maintaining financial system integrity. Backed by Greylock, Y Combinator, and Thomson Reuters, we're among the fastest-growing AI companies globally.

We value people who:

Take action quickly, learning by doing rather than seeking perfection

Think boldly to reimagine financial services

Deeply understand customer needs to build elegant solutions

Show potential and continuous growth, not just experience

We've brought together exceptional builders from Palantir, SpaceX, Stripe, Airbnb, Meta, Uber, and Databricks to tackle financial system challenges. Our AI agents fight financial crime by automating suspicious activity investigations, entity due diligence, and regulatory reporting, helping banks and fintechs protect the integrity of the global financial system.

Our team combines technical excellence with practical problem-solving, low-ego collaboration, relentless curiosity, and autonomous work. We're seeking diverse perspectives that elevate our collective capabilities. Bretton AI is an equal opportunity employer welcoming applicants from all backgrounds.

About the role

About Bretton AI

Bretton AI is the leading AI agent platform for financial services. Companies like Robinhood, Mercury and Gusto trust us to automate mission critical work, starting with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism investigations.

We’ve raised over $90M from Greylock, Y Combinator, Thomson Reuters Ventures and other top tier investors. We’re based in downtown San Francisco and our team comes from world-class organizations like SpaceX, Google, Netflix, Stripe, Plaid and more.

The Role

We’re hiring Platform Engineers to build and operate the infrastructure that powers compliance at scale.

You’ll own reliability, performance, and scalability across our core systems. You will design Postgres schemas, optimize queries, build high-throughput services, orchestrate long-running workflows (Temporal), and maintain our commitment to 99.9%+ uptime for customers processing thousands of cases per day.

You’ll write production backend code, design distributed systems, and own the infrastructure that empowers our product teams to ship fast without breaking production.

What You’ll Do

  • Build APIs and services that handle thousands of concurrent requests.
  • Architect ingestion → assessment → delivery pipelines for our cases.
  • Implement Temporal workflows for long-running, stateful processes.
  • Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas and queries for our compliance workflows.
  • Own CI/CD , deployments, and infrastructure-as-code , and drive observability through logging, tracing, and metrics.
  • Debug slow queries, memory leaks, and race conditions in our production environment.

What We’re Looking For

Must-Haves

  • 4+ years (Engineer) / 6+ years (Sr. Engineer) / 8+ years (Staff Engineer) of backend or infrastructure experience.
  • Strong systems fundamentals, including distributed systems, databases, APIs, and concurrency.
  • Proven production experience, including debugging live systems, incident response, and on-call rotations.
  • PostgreSQL expertise, including query optimization, indexing, schema design, and migrations.
  • An ownership mindset: you close the loop, write postmortems, and prevent the recurrence of issues.

Technical Skills

  • Languages: TypeScript/Node.js (primary), SQL (advanced), Python (nice to have).
  • Databases: PostgreSQL/Supabase, RLS, query planning.
  • Workflow: Temporal (preferred) or Airflow/Prefect/Cadence.
  • Cloud/Infra: AWS/GCP/Azure, Docker, CI/CD (GitHub Actions).
  • Monitoring: Datadog (or Grafana/Prometheus/New Relic/Sentry).

Bonus

  • Fintech/RegTech experience (security, audit logging).
  • AI/LLM infrastructure experience (prompt orchestration, token limits, cost management).
  • Experience with high-throughput systems and chaos/resilience testing.
  • VPC architecture and cloud networking (security groups, private endpoints, compliance requirements).

About you

You are motivated by the opportunity to join a startup at our stage because you want to build something fast and have a direct impact—not because you need extensive structure. You are energized by combining technical work with customer interaction. You love solving open-ended problems, asking good questions, and structuring solutions without needing perfect specifications upfront.

You make pragmatic decisions with incomplete information and proactively pull in the right people to overcome blockers. You are adaptable when priorities shift and have a growth mindset. You understand the broader system you’re working in—not just what the AI does, but how it fits into the customer’s full workflow.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $168k - $213k base salary + meaningful equity
  • Comprehensive healthcare, 401k matching, commuter benefits
  • 15 days PTO + holidays, unlimited sick days
  • Flexible leave options
  • Working late? We cover DoorDash and Uber home

Join us in building AI that protects the global financial system from financial crimes that fund terrorism and human trafficking.
