About Airhart Aeronautics

Airhart Aeronautics is building airplanes anyone can fly. We are developing advanced flight control hardware, software, and systems to enable a new generation of pilots to fly airplanes. Traditionally, pilots have to manage all of the mechanics of flight, while juggling communication, navigation, passengers, congested airspaces, and possible emergencies. Airhart's advanced technology extends the ideas of fly-by-wire aircraft to a new level to make flying simple, intuitive, and most importantly, safe.

About the role

Airhart is building next-generation general aviation avionics. Founded and led by engineers from SpaceX, Carbon, and Ford, we are designing hardware and software to build the future of regional travel. We are seeking an early-career HMI/UI Designer to design intuitive, safety-critical user interfaces for modern avionics systems. This role focuses on human–machine interface (HMI) design for primary and multifunction displays for GA aircraft, with an emphasis on clarity, usability, and design polish

You will work closely with software engineers and other designers to translate operational requirements into clean, usable, and certifiable cockpit interfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Design user interfaces for avionics displays, including:
    • Primary and secondary flight display
    • Engine and system monitoring pages
    • Configuration, alerting, and failure-mode views
  • Translate system requirements, pilot workflows, and operational constraints into clear UI layouts and interaction models
  • Design for real-world constraints
    • Sunlight readability, night modes, and color vision considerations
    • Limited screen sizes and input methods (buttons, knobs, touch)
    • Safety-critical alert prioritization and information hierarchy
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to ensure designs are feasible on embedded hardware
  • Iterate designs based on internal reviews, simulator testing, and pilot feedback
  • Maintain UI consistency, style guides, and design system elements
  • Support documentation needed for internal reviews

Required Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in UI, UX, or HMI design
  • Strong understanding of usability principles and information hierarchy
  • Experience creating wireframes and high-fidelity mockups using modern design tools (e.g., Figma)
  • Ability to reason about complex systems and present information clearly and unambiguously
  • Comfort working with engineers and interpreting technical requirements
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency
  • Willingness to work onsite in Long Beach, CA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing for embedded systems, industrial controls, automotive, aerospace, or other safety-critical interfaces
  • Familiarity with aviation concepts (EFIS, PFD/MFD layouts, alerts, checklists) or strong interest in learning them
  • Basic understanding of human factors or human-centered design principles
  • Portfolio demonstrating clean, systems-oriented UI design

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on real, flight-critical avionics systems for the future of general aviation aircraft and regional travel
  • Close collaboration with a small, highly technical engineering team
  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Onsite role with hands-on exposure to hardware, simulators, and test workflows

Please submit your resume and a portfolio showcasing relevant UI/HMI work.

Technology

The core of Airhart's technology is advanced hardware, software, and electronics to manage all the physics of flying an airplane. This frees the pilot to focus entirely on what pilots are good at: making decisions throughout the flight to keep it safe and getting where they want to go.

Airhart is building the full stack (electrical design, software design, and mechanical design and integration) into an airframe manufactured by a manufacturing partner. This enables us to focus on what we are best at--control systems--and not re-invent the wheel (or airplane wing)
