Overview

Lago is hiring a Head of Engineering to lead and scale its engineering organization through the next stage of growth. You'll architect systems for scale, build a high-performing team, and embed reliability and ownership into how we operate. This role combines technical depth and organizational leadership — designing architecture, scaling delivery, and creating a culture where engineers do the best work of their careers.

What You'll Be Doing

• Build and scale a world-class engineering org (~20 FTEs today, +50–100% in 12 months)
• Hire, mentor, and grow top engineering talent
• Drive predictable, high-velocity delivery and continuous improvement
• Architect systems for scale, reliability, and performance
• Oversee infrastructure, monitoring, and incident response
• Shape Lago's long-term technical strategy with founders and product leads
• Foster a culture of clarity, feedback, and high agency

Requirements

• Proven experience leading and scaling engineering teams (ideally 15+ engineers) at a high-growth tech company
• Strong technical background in backend systems, infrastructure, or developer tools
• Track record of hiring and developing senior engineering talent
• Experience driving architectural decisions at scale — reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including with non-technical stakeholders
• A mindset of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous improvement

Nice to have

• Experience with open-source products or developer-facing infrastructure
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Kafka, or similar stack
• Prior experience as a first or early engineering leadership hire at a startup
• Exposure to billing, fintech, or usage-based pricing systems
