Soraban builds AI-powered tax workflow software for accounting firms. Our platform processes high volumes of tax documents during seasonal peaks, and reliability, scale, and correctness are critical for our customers.
We’re an onsite engineering team, with offices in San Francisco, CA and Tempe, AZ.
Role Overview
We are hiring a Senior Test & Release Engineer to own test strategy, test automation, manual testing, and release quality across the platform.
This is a senior individual contributor role. You will define test plans, perform exploratory testing, build and maintain automation, manage test infrastructure, and enforce quality gates for every production release.
You may need to review work from contract SDETs, but you are expected to write and own tests yourself.
Responsibilities

Test Strategy & Coverage
- Define test plans for new features and system changes
- Translate requirements and user flows into risk-based test cases
- Identify high-risk areas and maintain strong regression coverage
- Define and track measurable test coverage goals

Test Automation
- Build and maintain end-to-end tests using Playwright
- Design coverage across UI and API layers
- Work with dev team to integrate tests into the CI/CD pipelines
- Reduce flakiness and improve execution speed

Release Quality & Gates
- Define and enforce release readiness criteria
- Validate staging before production deploys
- Support rollback and hotfix validation
- Reproduce incidents and prevent regressions
- Reduce escaped defects over time

Test Infrastructure & Data
- Own test environments and test data management
- Ensure staging environments are production-representative where appropriate
- Maintain stable CI test pipelines and reporting

Release Process
- Work within git-based release workflows (branching, tagging, hotfixes)
- Validate release artifacts before production deploys
- Improve release discipline and rollback safety

Performance & Risk Validation
- Partner with engineering to validate performance for major changes
- Support load or stress testing when required
- Ensure system behavior is acceptable under peak conditions

Collaboration
- Work closely with Product to clarify acceptance criteria
- Partner with Engineers during development to prevent defects early
- Review and guide contract SDET contributions as needed
Required Experience
- 5+ years in SDET/test engineering roles
- Strong experience with Playwright or similar E2E automation frameworks
- Strong hands-on manual and exploratory testing experience
- Experience building automated test suites from scratch
- Deep understanding of functional, regression, and integration testing
- Experience with git-based release workflows
- Familiarity with CI/CD systems
- Strong debugging skills and ability to isolate root causes
- Experience managing test data and environments
Nice to Have
- Experience testing SaaS platforms with multi-tenant architectures
- Experience with tax or other document-heavy workflow software systems
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS preferred)
- Exposure to performance or load testing frameworks
- Experience working in high-reliability or seasonal peak systems
