About Cairns Health

Cairns Health (https://www.cairns.ai/) is creating a fundamentally better healthcare experience for people with chronic health conditions and those who care for them. We make healthcare more accessible by simplifying complex care plans, connecting care teams and meeting patients where they live. Through our conversational AI, patients use their voice to interact with our digital care companion, who proactively gives medication reminders, symptom checks, behavioral nudges and even engages in friendly conversation to ease loneliness. Cairns uses a device that includes radar to put the patient in context and passively monitors their activities, including: heart rate, breathing rate and sleep stages, all without a wearable. The result is informed and timely intervention that drives improved clinical outcomes, reduced care delivery costs and a more satisfactory healthcare experience for all.

About the role

Cairns Health is looking for a full-time Senior QA Engineer to own quality across Luna, our AI-powered digital health companion. This role is for someone who is obsessive about reliability, edge cases, and failure modes—especially in systems where software behavior directly impacts patient trust and clinical safety.

You’ll design and execute testing strategies across our AI, product, and platform stack, ensuring that new features ship with confidence and regressions don’t slip through. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, and clinical teams to define what “good” looks like—and then enforce it.

This is not a checkbox QA role. You’ll help build the quality muscle of the company.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain QA processes for web, backend, and AI-driven systems.
  • Build and execute test plans covering functional, regression, integration, and edge-case scenarios.
  • Develop automated tests and testing frameworks where appropriate; know when manual testing is the right call.
  • Report on test results regularly with statistical significance.
  • Validate AI behavior, including correctness, safety, tone consistency, and failure handling.
  • Partner with engineers early in the development lifecycle to prevent defects, not just catch them.
  • Reproduce, document, and track bugs with clear, actionable steps and severity assessments.
  • Participate in release planning, go/no-go decisions, and post-release quality reviews.
  • Continuously improve QA tooling, coverage, and processes in a fast-moving startup environment.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 5+ years of experience in QA, test engineering, or software quality roles.
  • Professional (non academic or internship) startup experience mandatory.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, test case design, and defect lifecycle management.
  • Experience testing modern web applications, APIs, and backend services.
  • Comfort working with automated testing tools (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Postman, pytest, or similar).
  • Ability to think adversarially: you instinctively look for how systems break.
  • Data-driven mindset that tracks results over time and can quantify progress.
  • Clear communicator who can advocate for quality without blocking progress.
  • Experience or strong interest in testing AI/ML systems, conversational interfaces, or probabilistic outputs.
  • Bonus: experience in healthcare, regulated environments, or safety-critical systems.
  • Comfortable working independently in a low-process, high-ownership startup setting.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.

What We Offer:

  • Full-time role with competitive salary.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, and a 401(k) plan.
  • Direct impact on the quality and safety of an AI system used by older adults and patients with chronic conditions.
  • Close collaboration with experienced teams in AI, healthcare, and product development.
  • Meaningful work that improves real patient and caregiver outcomes.
