About Cairns Health

Cairns Health (https://www.cairns.ai/) is creating a fundamentally better healthcare experience for people with chronic health conditions and those who care for them. We make healthcare more accessible by simplifying complex care plans, connecting care teams and meeting patients where they live. Through our conversational AI, patients use their voice to interact with our digital care companion, who proactively gives medication reminders, symptom checks, behavioral nudges and even engages in friendly conversation to ease loneliness. Cairns uses a device that includes radar to put the patient in context and passively monitors their activities, including: heart rate, breathing rate and sleep stages, all without a wearable. The result is informed and timely intervention that drives improved clinical outcomes, reduced care delivery costs and a more satisfactory healthcare experience for all.

About the role

AI Driven Remote Care Platform for Seniors & Polychronic Patients

Hardware Engineer

We’re seeking an experienced and driven hardware engineer to join our world-class engineering team at Cairns Health. This critical role will support our efforts at the intersection of conversational AI, radar technology, and embedded sensing systems. You will play a key role in designing, building, and optimizing the hardware that powers our LLM-backed digital health companion and passive monitoring platform. Our ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver with strong prototyping skills, deep understanding of electronics and embedded systems, and a passion for delivering reliable, production-ready hardware.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and validation of embedded hardware systems, including radar-based sensors and supporting electronics.
  • Own schematic capture, PCB layout, component selection, and hardware bring-up for new products.
  • Collaborate with firmware and software teams to ensure seamless integration across system layers.
  • Perform hardware debugging and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab equipment.
  • Develop and execute test plans to ensure hardware meets performance, reliability, and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee manufacturing handoff, including BOM management, DFM/DFT, and vendor coordination.
  • Drive continuous improvement of hardware design processes to optimize cost, performance, and scalability.
  • Ensure hardware safety, regulatory compliance, and robust operation in real-world environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience, with 3+ years in hardware or embedded systems engineering.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering production hardware, from concept through manufacturing.
  • Strong skills in schematic design, PCB layout, and hardware prototyping.
  • Proficient in CAD tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or OrCAD.
  • Experience with radar, RF, or other sensing technologies is a plus.
  • Skilled in using lab equipment for measurement, validation, and debugging.
  • Familiarity with low-power design principles and battery-powered systems.
  • Understanding of firmware-hardware co-design and integration workflows.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards (FCC, CE, ISO) and compliance testing.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to resolve complex hardware issues quickly.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-first attitude.

Benefits

We offer competitive compensation, equity & benefits—including medical, dental, vision, paid vacation/sick days, and 401(k) plans.

Location

This role works on-site from Sunnyvale, CA at least 4 days per week.
