About Beanstalk

Brothers, Michael and Jack, started Beanstalk as a solution to solve a local restaurant’s need for consistent, high-quality salad. In doing so, they created a new vertical farming technology capable of growing lettuces, spinach, basil, carrots, lavender, and more.

Beanstalk is at the nexus of industrial robotics, plant science, and the culinary arts. Our technology enables us to develop new products quickly, automate traditionally labor-intensive work, and connect consumers to fresh produce in ways not before seen.

We’re backed by top VCs and investors and looking for engineers, researchers, and operators that want to build the next generation of farms.

Want to join our team and grow the world’s consumption of fresh produce? Send your resume to [email protected].

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repairs

  • Maintain and repair farming and packaging machinery in a sanitary, washdown environment that meets SQF (GMP) standards.
  • Ensure equipment is clean, organized, and ready for daily use.

Systems Support

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical systems, including wiring, motors, VFDs, bearings, belts, gears, and pulleys.
  • Maintain plumbing and HVAC systems to support optimal crop growth.
  • Configure and troubleshoot VFDs and automation systems to maximize performance.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Recommend system upgrades based on data and operator feedback.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to SQF (GMP), OSHA, and industry safety standards.
  • Train staff on proper equipment use and maintenance procedures.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work alongside engineers and fabricators to improve systems and processes.
  • Keep detailed records of maintenance activities and equipment performance.

What We’re Looking For

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering field, or equivalent hands-on experience.

Experience:

  • 5+ years in facilities engineering, ideally in food production, manufacturing, or controlled environment agriculture.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and automation systems.
  • Hands-on experience with VFDs, industrial equipment, and mechanical repairs (motors, bearings, belts).
  • Familiarity with food safety and workplace safety standards (OSHA, SQF, GMP).
  • Bonus: Electrician’s license; experience in vertical farming or hydroponics.

Attributes:

  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to a clean, organized workspace.
  • Strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.
  • Clear communicator, able to work across teams.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in a washdown environment.
  • Valid driver’s license; willingness to work flexible or non-standard hours as needed.

Why Join Us?
Become part of a mission-driven team revolutionizing sustainable agriculture. At Beanstalk, your work will help deliver fresh, pesticide-free produce to local communities. We offer a collaborative culture, competitive benefits (health, dental, vision), and clear career growth opportunities toward operations management or engineering leadership—all within a fast-growing Series A company.

Technology

At the core of Beanstalk is a new set of modern, industrial technology. For example, we've built an autonomous forklift that costs less than $10k (compared to $500k) and can be controlled via an API or through an iPad running our React app.

"What does this have to do with growing plants?", you might be asking. Well, before launching a large scale farm, we spent years designing an inexpensive system that contains everything a plant needs to grow in the form of a pallet. As a result, our farms look like distribution centers, and our machinery operates on easy to move and store pallets. This reduces vertical farming costs 10x which expands our selection of profitable crops a great deal.

To further reduce costs and increase throughput, we design machinery that plants, moves, and processes the food we grow. To do this as quickly and cheaply as possible, we build our own systems.

Machines are designed in Autodesk software. Actuators and sensors interface through industrial I/O boards which are controlled by Linux-based single-board computers (SBCs) like the Raspberry Pi. We deploy to the SBCs over the air and monitor them via cloud-based systems. Operators interact machinery via React Web Apps that communicate with our databases via a GraphQL API.

If you're interested in revolutionizing industrial machinery and building technology that will locally grow foods from around the world, please apply!
