We’re building the inverse: 90%+ AI-led, inching toward the higher 90s. Not by automating tasks, but by capturing the decision traces—the exceptions, precedents, and cross-system context—that let AI make the same judgment calls humans do.

The Thesis

Every industry with human-bounded distribution consolidates rapidly once someone makes it computational. Search had thousands of engines until Google made ranking computational. Ride-hailing was fragmented until Uber made dispatch computational.

When distribution becomes computational, Jevons Paradox kicks in: increased efficiency leads to increased consumption. Better search didn’t mean less searching—it meant vastly more. Cheaper rides didn’t mean fewer trips—it meant transportation for use cases that never existed.

Insurance will follow the same pattern. When getting the right coverage becomes fast and frictionless, the 77% of underinsured businesses will finally get properly protected. The market expands, not contracts.

The Role

You’ll build the AI systems that operate Harper. Not “AI features”—the actual intelligence that runs a company serving thousands of businesses.

This is full-stack in the truest sense: the interface a customer sees, the backend that processes their policy, the AI layer that makes decisions. Your code ships to production and generates revenue the same week you write it.

We’re a growing engineering team looking for high-agency operators. You’ll work directly with the founders. There’s no committee. No approval chain. You build it, you ship it, you own the outcome.

What You’ll Build

AI agents that run the business. An agent that qualifies a lead at 2am, another that answers a customer’s certificate request at 7am, another that follows up with an underwriter at noon—all without human intervention. You’ll build agents that do the work of entire departments, and get smarter with every interaction.

Workflow orchestration at scale. A customer asks for a policy change. That triggers document retrieval, carrier API calls, compliance checks, and human review—coordinated across thousands of concurrent transactions. You’ll build the pipelines that make this invisible.

Voice AI that actually works. Real-time voice agents for sales calls, customer service, and underwriter follow-ups. Most voice AI sounds like a robot reading a script. Ours needs to handle a skeptical business owner who asks “wait, what does that actually cover?”

The systems that compound. Every exception our AI encounters becomes searchable precedent. Every decision gets traced. Every outcome feeds back into the system. You’ll build the infrastructure that makes our AI smarter with each interaction—the reason we’ll be better in six months than anyone starting today.

You Might Be a Fit If…

You write code with AI. Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf—you’ve figured out that AI changes how software gets built. You can manage multiple coding sessions simultaneously and ship faster than anyone thought possible.

You’ve shipped AI to production. Real systems serving real users. LLM applications, agent pipelines, voice AI, RAG systems—something where it mattered if it broke.

You’re full-stack by instinct. Frontend, backend, infrastructure—you do all of it. You don’t wait for “the right person” to unblock you. If it needs doing, you figure it out.

You ship fast and iterate. You’ve built meaningful features in days that others would take months on. You know that shipping something imperfect today beats shipping something perfect never.

You’re 1-4 years into your career. Enough experience to be dangerous, not so much that you’ve forgotten how to build from scratch.

Compensation

Salary: $140,000 - $200,000

Equity: 0.01% - 0.20%

Location: San Francisco, in-office. We build together.

3. If outside SF: Technical phone screen, then on-site

The Super Day: You’ll show how you rapidly gain context on a new codebase, use AI code generation to architect and ship, and manage multiple coding sessions simultaneously. We assess how you build, not just what you know.
