About Maritime Fusion

Maritime Fusion is building fusion reactors for ships. We’re laser focused on designing, optimizing, and manufacturing HTS tokamaks to decarbonize global shipping and deliver operational energy and HTS technology to defense customers. Since participating in the world's leading startup accelerator, Y Combinator, we’ve moved quickly to plot the most pragmatic path to getting the First of a Kind (FOAK) fusion reactors out in the world in an application most primed to benefit from recent advances in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Our founding team brings a unique blend of hands-on engineering experience from Tesla and SpaceX, combined with deep academic expertise in plasma physics and fusion energy technology from academia and industry.

About the role

Every startup claims a “fast pace and dynamic environment” but at Maritime Fusion we truly operate in controlled chaos mode. The gravitas of the mission calls for a unique company structure, rewarding high performance and dynamically allocating resources. We’re a small company (for now) with plans to grow a world class fusion workforce. This is an opportunity to join at the very early stage, the stage where all employees wear all hats. We can’t guarantee success, but we can guarantee excitement, worthwhile projects, extreme ownership, and good (great?) vibes. Iron man 1 movie sound track plays on loop in the lab.

We’re looking for an Electromechanical Engineer who’s just as comfortable designing high power circuits as they are cranking out CAD for mechanical assemblies. If you love building real things—fast—and want to own the entire process of designing, prototyping, testing, and helping us scale from early builds to functional systems, you’ll fit right in.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Hands-on work building and testing HTS (high-temperature superconducting) magnets, high-current power supplies, energy storage systems, and cryogenic cooling systems.
  • Designing and prototyping high current REBCO based conductors and associated testing infrastructure.
  • Standing up our R&D lab, setting up all kinds of equipment and scientific instruments.
  • Owning your designs from CAD to test stand—generating models and drawings, working with vendors to get the parts, and spearheading assembly.
  • Debugging hardware, defining requirements, translating tokamak system level attributes to subsystem performance metrics.
  • Solving hard problems.

What You Bring:

  • Well rounded electromechanical engineering skillset, ranging from FEA, CAD, PCB design and layout, power electronics, embedded software development.
  • Experience designing real hardware—both the physical parts and the electronics and control systems that make them go.
  • Familiarity with CAD & FEA tools (CATIA, SolidWorks, Ansys, COMSOL, etc.) and circuit design and power electronics basics (Altium & KiCad, SiC converters).
  • Bonus points if you’ve worked with data acquisition systems, PLCs, Python scripting, or high [vacuum, voltage, current] and REBCO tape specifically.
  • Willingness to do the dirty work involved with early stage startups; assemble the office furniture, setup software licenses, form strong external industry relationships.
Technology

Plasma physics (equilibrium, current drive, turbulence, shaping, etc) Structural and magnet engineering (10T toroidal field magnets) Systems integration (vacuum vessel + beam ports + diagnostics + blanket tank + fueling + maintenance operations) Feedback control (disruption avoidance and prediction, quench detection) auxiliary systems (magnet cryogenic system, RF gyrotrons + power supplies, molten salt system and heat exchanger)
