CommodityAI
CommodityAI builds intelligent automation agents for some of the most operationally complex businesses in the world: physical commodity traders.
In commodity operations, critical data is often scattered across spreadsheets, emails, PDFs, and legacy systems, resulting in slow, error-prone, and overly manual workflows.
CommodityAI acts as a digital operator — continuously reading, interpreting, and updating information across the trade lifecycle to keep records accurate and systems in sync.
Our agents extract and validate key details from trade confirmations, contracts, vessel updates, and more — turning scattered, unstructured data into clean, structured records that flow directly into CTRMs, ERPs, and other core platforms.
By automating what others still do by hand, we help trading teams move faster, reduce risk, and focus on the decisions that matter most.
Why Join Us
We’re a Y Combinator–backed company (W24 batch) driving AI adoption within the $10T+ physical commodity trading industry.
CommodityAI is backed by some of the top investors in the world, including:
- Y Combinator
-
Rebel Fund (founded by Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit)
-
Jawed Karim, co-founder of YouTube
-
Gurtin Ventures and other leading early-stage investors
As one of the earliest hires outside the founding team, you’ll have the rare opportunity to shape not just our product, but how we build as a company. You’ll work directly with the founders — shipping features, influencing strategy, and making decisions that impact customers and the business every day.
We move fast, operate with extreme ownership, and deeply value engineers who can think like founders.
Who You Are
We’re looking for a senior or staff-level engineer with experience building in fast-paced startup environments — someone who thrives on autonomy, makes great decisions, and takes pride in seeing their work drive real customer impact.
You won’t just code — you’ll design and build agentic, LLM-powered systems that operate in production, shaping how our customers interact with data and automation.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has sound technical judgment and can make trade-offs that balance speed, quality, and long-term value.
- Operates with trust and agency, freeing others from needing to manage or unblock them.
- Has hands-on experience deploying AI/LLM-based systems in real-world settings (retrieval, evaluation, orchestration, or structured extraction).
- Is deeply curious about the problems we’re solving — whether that’s in commodities, logistics, or applied AI.
- Works best when given context, not control — you decide what needs to be done and move.
This role is ideal for someone who’s been an early technical leader at a startup, loves the 0→1 stage, and wants to have tangible ownership in building something transformative.
What You’ll Do
- Build and scale the core systems that power our intelligent automation platform.
- Work across the stack — from backend APIs and data pipelines to LLM orchestration and frontend workflows.
- Design and deploy agentic AI components that handle reasoning, extraction, and decision-making at scale.
- Collaborate directly with customers to understand problems and deliver meaningful, production-ready solutions.
- Contribute to a culture of ownership, autonomy, and trust — where every engineer is empowered to make high-impact decisions.
Qualifications
-
6+ years of professional experience in software engineering, ideally at a fast-paced startup or high-growth company.
- Proven ability to own projects end-to-end — from idea to architecture, implementation, and deployment.
- Demonstrated experience building and shipping LLM- or agent-based systems in production, including orchestration, structured outputs, or evaluation workflows.
- Strong in React, TypeScript, Go, Node, or Python (we value good judgment and adaptability over any one stack).
- Exceptional technical judgment — knows when to move fast and when to build for the long term.
- Experience making impactful product or system decisions that improved user experience or team velocity.
- Demonstrated ownership mentality — acts in the best interest of the company and customer without waiting for direction.
- Passion for solving complex, real-world operational problems — ideally with exposure to commodities, logistics, or data automation.
Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Meaningful equity in a rapidly growing company
- Flexible hybrid work setup
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
- Opportunity to shape the future of an old-school yet vital global industry
- A collaborative, high-trust environment where your decisions have real impact
👉 In short: We’re looking for a senior/staff-level engineer with the judgment and agency of a founder — someone who’s built real LLM-powered systems, can make great decisions on behalf of the company, and helps us move faster toward our mission.
