Flowly is an app for chronic pain, anxiety, and sleep management. You can think of it like the VR version of Calm, but we send all of our members a kit that includes a VR headset and heart rate sensor. Essentially, we train members to auto-regulate their nervous systems and transition from fight or flight mode to relax and restore mode. We're an early stage startup and a small team but we move quickly. We have a grant from the NIH taking Flowly through clinical trials and we're also distributing Flowly currently through the Apple App store.
Flowly is a science-backed and data-driven app designed to reduce stress, anxiety and pain for improved overall wellness. Using a mobile app and VR headset, Flowly collects biometric data such as HR and HRV and converts it to visualizations in virtual experiences that reduce stress and pain by over 40%.
The founding team is made up of Yale, DreamWorks, and Hyperloop One alums in conjunction with a world-class clinical team at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and USC. Flowly has also been studied in NIH-backed clinical trials.
Flowly is venture-backed and graduate of Y Combinator. Our members report life-changing outcomes including how Flowly has empowered them to stop taking opioids, sleep through the night for the first time in fifteen years, and experience deep relaxation on a daily basis.
While we would love to build a team primarily based in Los Angeles, we want to hire the best talent regardless of location. (Open to remote)
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our team. They will be the first full-time, internal engineering hire on our team and as such will play an instrumental role in Flowly's growth and trajectory over the coming years. They will be the responsible for working and coordinating with our team on new features, building out internal automation systems, maintaining and updating existing infrastructure. They will be adept at balancing the need for exceptional work while keeping up with the pace of a fast growing early-stage startup.
You’re excited about this opportunity because you will...
We’re excited about you because…
You are stoked to have a front-row seat to a fast-growing startup, learning and observing how the business is scaled and having a real impact on Flowly’s success. Your success in this role prepares you to grow your position with the company. We also hope to see from you:
4+ years of professional engineering experience architecting and implementing backend infrastructure ideally at an early stage.
Expertise in Node.js, OR a demonstrated ability to learn and operate in many languages. You love a particular language and you know why you do.
Experience with building and scaling serverless systems.
Passion for developing scalable, well-designed software that people love.
Strong Frontend knowledge of React, Swift, or Kotlin
Entrepreneurial spirit. On our team, everyone needs to act like a startup CEO. You must be self-directed, innovative, and biased towards action in fast-paced environments. You live to build new things and thrive in ambiguity and even failure.
Excellent communication skills. You must be able to collaborate effectively with teams in a fully-remote environment, and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audience.
Why you’ll love working with us...
Flowly's technology can be broken down into four main components: The app, Unity, AWS Backend, and web portal
The app Currently, Flowly is built for iOS with Swift (and Objective C where necessary). We've embedded Unity Engine as a framework which allows us to run our VR experiences. In the app we use services like Segment, Appsflyer, Branch, Facebook Events SDK, Apple In-App Purchases, Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics, RemoteConfig, Dynamic Links)
Our goal is to transition to a flutter, cross-platform approach and we aim to do so within the next few months
Unity Our app's main content is all built in Unity. We use Google Cardboard SDK for VR functionality. Our content is distributed via asset bundles.
AWS Our backend is currently serverless, configured and deployed using AWS Amplify. We use Cognito, DynamoDB, AppSync, API Gateway, S3, and Lambda. Our Core API is GraphQL, configured via AppSync. Our app consumes the backend via Amplify frontend SDKs.
Web Portal Our web portal is built in React. Currently it just serves as a payment portal, but we have plans to add functionality in the next few months.
