About AstroForge

AstroForge is a deep space asteroid mining company based in Huntington Beach, California. The company was founded by Matt Gialich and Jose Acain, who have over a decade of experience working in aerospace at NASA, SpaceX, and Virgin Orbit. AstroForge plans to tap into the unlimited amount of resources that exist in space utilizing our small exploration and mining satellites capable of recovering large amounts of rare earth metals per mission.

About the role

At AstroForge, our mission is to expand humanity’s capabilities to utilize the untapped resources in space. The Head of Sciences position will be a key member of AstroForge to develop our refinery technology and continuously research novel methods in the extraction and refining of valuable resources in support of creating the first successful asteroid mining vehicle.


  • Drive system trades, requirements capture, component selection, simulate, analysis, schematic capture, prototyping, bring-up, debugging, documentation, manufacturing, and testing of our refinery payload system.
  • Create development and qualification testing campaigns and exercise designs to their limits
  • Support development of laboratory prototype of our refinery payload system.
  • Lead a team of scientists and work with the engineering team in the continuous development and research related to the refining and extraction of materials in space.

  • Strong understanding in plasma and particle physics
  • Strong grasp of deep space radiation environments concepts.
  • Experience preferred in fast-paced R&D and prototyping environment
  • Able to adapt to constant changing work assignments and fast paced work environment
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and teamwork skills
  • Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy


  • Extended hours, day or night shift, and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones

AstroForge is creating cubesats capable of reaching deep space orbits and plans to deploy this technology for asteroid mining. With its modular design, it can be adapted to fit other payloads and mission profiles offering a highly flexible, low-cost satellite.
