What we're looking for

Albert Einstein calls compound interest the eighth wonder of the world. Compound interest is a form of leverage that is rocket fuel for startups to help them scale. Leverage is a superpower and those who can apply it will always have an outsized impact.

Anyone who can help set up the base structure to scale different areas of a business and fuel growth by removing bottlenecks will move the needle wherever they are but doing this is much easier said than done... One must be able to wear multiple hats, zoom in and zoom out on a daily basis, seamlessly integrate and weave into the end-to-end operations of a team, and have a crisp understanding of where to apply leverage and apply pressure. Sound complex? It absolutely is. But this is where a Chief of Staff steps in to be the glue and cohesiveness that holds companies together behind the scenes.

Not only does a Chief of Staff have the opportunity to play a mission-critical role in a startup in terms of impact but also, they provide significant strategic involvement in initiatives, have unparalleled access and visibility to leadership, and arguably, have the highest leverage opportunity for impact and exposure on how an early stage company grows and is built from the ground up.

On any given day, you might find yourself launching new product, growth, or operations initiatives, consulting on various projects throughout the company, driving our marketing and outreach efforts, and more.

What you will do

  • Help guide our overall strategy across the org and drive special projects across Marketing, Product, Operations, and Growth.
  • Report directly to our CEO, Arjun. The personal growth opportunity here and the opportunity for impact is gargantuan: if Arjun were to step away for a few days or a week, the Chief of Staff would step in and represent to the entire company as "Arjun #2." If that kind of opportunity and impact excites you, this role is for you.
  • Manage internal and external communication to and from team members, strategic partners, investors, and customers. This will also include managing action items and any needed coordination with stakeholders to consistently hit goals and achieve agreed-upon outcomes.
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner to not only the CEO but the entire company as a whole. Given the visibility the Chief of Staff will have, we want you to constantly be thinking of new value we can add to the business whether that's through partnerships, growth/product ideas, or discovering new opportunities "hidden in plain sight."
  • Here are some tactical examples of recent initiatives we've completed that you would have played an active role in:
  • Marketing : Work directly with our paid marketing team and content operations team to scale the top of funnel awareness to potential customers. This includes managing ad spending, coordinating with external stakeholders on new paid marketing experiments, working with content operations to ensure the timely processing and delivery of new content, and running end-to-end points on ensuring we can distribute new content widely across all of our channels and platforms.
  • Product : Spec and drive new product initiative to ship a new product feature in our dashboard. Work directly with engineers to ensure the project is properly scoped and shipped on time. Build a "minimum viable product" to test a new micro-service that is either used internally by the team (for example, automating form completion for the IRS) or externally by customers (for example, a new email campaign + signup flow + purchase link for a new product offering).
  • Operations : Work with Airtable and other no-code tools like Webflow to build automation to streamline processes for customers and internal teams like customer success.
  • Growth : Connect the dots to unearth new opportunities. This could be running a campaign to work with more strategic partners, cold outreach to communities to create new marketing vectors, and much more.

Who you are

  • You're a problem solver. We don't care if you're a year out of school or it's been twenty years since you graduated.
  • You are an extremely organized "swiss army knife" type generalist, with phenomenal attention to detail. There are many moving pieces at a startup, especially in this role, and you are someone who dots all i's, crosses all t's, and ensures the train leaves the station at the right time.
  • You zoom in and zoom out seamlessly. This isn't a strategy-only role and this isn't an execution-only role where you will be told every single thing that needs to be done. If you can zoom in to be a ruthless executer with fantastic prioritization and zoom out shortly after to talk and think strategically, that's music to our ears.
  • You're a self-starter and get the startup grind. Work will be ambiguous at times but the challenge of finding order in the chaos and working autonomously if need, be excites you. You are proactive and do not need to be micromanaged. In other words, this is not the kind of job where you show up and are told exactly what to do every day.

Technology

To get a sense of the technology we use at our company, and the hard/interesting technical problems we're solving, here is what we look for in full stack engineers:

  • Thoughtful problem-solving: For you, problem-solving starts with a clear and accurate understanding of the context. You can decompose tricky problems and work towards a clean solution, by yourself or with teammates. You're comfortable asking for help when you get stuck.
  • Shipping quality user interfaces: You can work with others to build and maintain quality user interfaces for a big audience, using Web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a modern UI framework like React. If you've experienced the technical challenges of rapid growth, that's a plus.
  • Familiarity with the backend: You understand how parts of a system fit together—from the user interface to the data model. Experienced candidates should be familiar with relational and document-oriented database systems like MySQL and MongoDB.
  • Pragmatic and business-oriented: You care about the business impact of what you're building, and you prioritize projects accordingly. You're not just going after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.
  • Put users first: You think critically about the implications of what you're building and how it shapes real people's lives. You understand that reach comes with responsibility for our impact—good and bad.
  • Not ideological about technology: To you, technologies and programming languages are about tradeoffs. You may be opinionated, but you're not ideological and can learn new technologies as you go.
  • Empathetic communication: You communicate nuanced ideas clearly, whether you're explaining technical decisions in writing or brainstorming in real-time. In disagreements, you engage thoughtfully with other perspectives and compromise when needed.
  • Team player: You understand when work is better, together. You enjoy collaborating cross-functionally to accomplish shared goals, and you care about learning, growing, and helping others to do the same.
  • Bonus points: You're proficient with any part of our technology stack: React, TypeScript, Node.js, and MongoDB.
