About Whatnot

Whatnot is a community marketplace where you can safely buy, sell, go live and build a community with other like-minded people.

We got our start offering a buying and selling experience to collectors of Funko Pops and Pokemon cards. We became the leading marketplace for those communities and have found success launching into categories like sports cards, NFTs, and vintage fashion.

In July of 2022, we raised $260 million in a Series D funding round bringing our valuation to $3.7 billion, a 2.5x increase since our $1.5 billion valuation in September of 2021.

Our mission is to enable anyone to turn their passion into a business and bring people together through commerce. We enable anyone to connect, transact and build a business in one place -- Whatnot is bringing the in-person retail experience online.

🚀 Whatnot

Whatnot (YC W20) is a livestream shopping platform and marketplace backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, and CapitalG. We’re one of YC’s top companies and one of the fastest growing marketplaces ever. We’re laser focused on creating an exceptional software company, team, and place to work. You can read our principles here.

Our mission: enable anyone to turn their passion into a business and bring people together through commerce. We’re building the future of ecommerce; an interactive community where creators can make a living off their passion.

Did we mention we’re high growth? In January 2021, Whatnot had 10 ambitious employees. Today, the Whatnot team is 300+ employees and will exceed 350 by year end. We’re hiring forward thinking problem solvers across all functional areas. We recruit thoughtfully, can adapt quickly, and are scaling fully remotely.

📈 Opportunity Size

The ecommerce experience has been static for 20+ years and is perhaps the largest opportunity in the startup space today. Livestream shopping is a $170B GMV market in China and has grown 100% YoY. Retail is a $5T market opportunity!

💻 Role

Discovery engineers at Whatnot are full stack engineers focused on enabling anyone to find the products & streams they are looking for by building a product taxonomy, product catalog, browse experience, and active recommendations to customers based on what we know about them.

To achieve our goals, we are passionate about understanding our buyer and seller experiences and becoming experts in our business metrics. We always prioritize the highest impact features and ship them quickly.
