Engineering Manager, Internal Product
Picnic’s mission is to structure the world’s medical data to make it useful. We work directly with patients to collect, digitize, and manage their complete medical records, giving them with control over their care through a personal health timeline (demo.picnichealth.com). We also partner with biopharma companies (3 of the top 6 in the world) who sponsor PicnicHealth accounts for research volunteers. Through this work we’re building the data sets that power some of today’s most cutting edge medical research. We’re currently 40 people based in the Mission District of SF, nearing our Series B raise, and continuing to grow!

PicnicHealth is rapidly growing. The engineering team has more than doubled in the first half of the year, and we are ahead of schedule for doubling again in the second half of the year. We are looking for our first Engineering Managers for the Internal Product and Platforms Team to help build and scale our engineering organization. You’ll not only grow and lead an engineering team, but you’ll help craft our beliefs and practices for how engineering should run and the role engineering management plays.
Your team will be responsible for building features and driving KPIs for our Internal Product or Platform Teams. You’ll immediately start managing a few engineers who are currently with PicnicHealth, and then you will attract and hire new talented engineers to build out your team. You should have deep technical ability so that you can effectively mentor the engineers on your team, help direct architectural decisions, drive to an ambitious roadmap, make tradeoffs in balancing competing constraints, and get your hands dirty if needed.
As an Engineering Manager, you will: Manage and build a team of engineers in one or more product areas Recruit great engineers and help establish PicnicHealth as a world class engineering company and culture Develop engineers on the team, helping them grow technically and professionally Develop and establish engineering systems and practices Obsess about the architectural design, implementation, and quality of the product your team produces Work with stakeholders across PicnicHealth to balance and accommodate competing priorities Roll up your sleeves and dive into code when you need to
You will have: Successfully led and managed teams, with at least 3 years of engineering management experience A strong track record of launching and delivering complex and ambiguous projects Deep technical expertise, with at least 5 years of individually contributing as a software engineer Successfully recruited and retained great people to your teams B.S. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
Ideally, you have: Experience/interest in working with our toolset - Frontend (React, Redux), Database (PostgreSQL, Redis, ElasticSearch), Services (Node, Python TensorFlow, Keras), Infrastructure (GCP, Kubernetes) Experience scaling startups during a hyper-growth phase Strong user-driven product orientation and mindset Strong desire to improve patient lives and the healthcare system MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field
